Creamy Scalloped Potatoes are an irresistible side dish featuring tender potato layers in a rich, creamy sauce. This comforting and customizable recipe is perfect for any occasion, from holiday gatherings to weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  3. Peel and thinly slice the potatoes.
  4. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add onion and garlic; cook until fragrant (3-5 minutes).
  5. Stir in flour, salt, pepper, and paprika. Gradually whisk in heavy cream and milk until thickened (4-5 minutes).
  6. Layer half the sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Pour half the sauce over and sprinkle half the cheese.
  7. Add remaining potato slices, pour remaining sauce, and top with remaining cheese.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake for 15 more minutes until tender and golden brown.
  9. Let cool slightly. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
  10. Cut into squares and serve warm.

Notes

  • Use fresh russet potatoes for best results.
  • Experiment with different cheeses like Gruyère or mozzarella.
  • Covering the dish initially helps the potatoes steam and cook through.
  • If the sauce is too thick, add more milk or cream.
  • Consider adding fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary between layers.
  • For a gluten-free version, use a gluten-free flour blend.
  • To make it healthier, use lower-fat dairy or plant-based milk.
