This Classic Slow Cooker BBQ Pulled Pork recipe is an easy and flavorful dish perfect for any occasion. Tender pork shoulder slow-cooked with savory spices and BBQ sauce, it’s ideal for sandwiches or family dinners.

  • 45 pounds pork shoulder or pork butt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 buns for serving
  • 1 cup coleslaw for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Trim excess fat from the pork shoulder and cut into large chunks if necessary.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear pork pieces on all sides until browned.
  3. In the same skillet, sauté diced onion and minced garlic for 2-3 minutes until softened.
  4. Place seared pork in the slow cooker. Add sautéed onion and garlic.
  5. Pour in chicken broth, BBQ sauce, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, chili powder, cumin, salt, and black pepper.
  6. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-6 hours until pork is tender.
  7. Remove pork from slow cooker and shred with two forks.
  8. Return shredded pork to slow cooker and stir to combine with juices and sauce.
  9. Serve the BBQ pulled pork on buns, with coleslaw if desired.

  • Adjust spiciness by adding more chili powder or hot sauce.
