Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 ripe bananas, mashed
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • ¼ cup powdered sugar
  • ½ cup chocolate syrup
  • ½ cup chopped nuts (e.g., walnuts or pecans)
  • Maraschino cherries, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the dry mixture, mixing until combined.
  4. Beat in the eggs and vanilla extract until smooth.
  5. Slowly add the buttermilk and mashed bananas to the batter. Mix until fully combined.
  6. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  9. In a mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar until soft peaks form.
  10. Place one cake layer on a serving platter. Spread a layer of whipped cream on top and drizzle with chocolate syrup. Sprinkle chopped nuts.
  11. Place the second cake layer on top and repeat the layers with whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and nuts.
  12. Top with dollops of whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and maraschino cherries for decoration.
