This Cake Batter Puppy Chow is a fun, festive snack mix. It features crispy cereal coated in white chocolate, cake mix, powdered sugar, and colorful sprinkles. This no-bake treat is perfect for parties and celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 oz Rice Chex cereal
  • 12 oz white chocolate chips
  • 4 tablespoons coconut oil or unsalted butter
  • 1 ½ cups yellow cake mix (heat-treated for safety)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • ½ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • ½ cup rainbow sprinkles
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: 1 cup broken pretzel sticks

Instructions

  1. Spread cake mix on a baking sheet and microwave for 75 seconds, stirring halfway through to heat-treat. Let it cool completely.
  2. Place the Rice Chex cereal in a very large heat-proof bowl.
  3. In a separate, medium-sized microwave-safe bowl, combine white chocolate chips and coconut oil (or butter). Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring vigorously after each, until smooth and glossy. Stir in vanilla extract if using.
  4. Add the cooled, heat-treated cake mix and salt to the melted white chocolate mixture. Stir until it forms a thick, luscious, cake-batter-flavored paste.
  5. Pour the cake batter chocolate mixture over the cereal. Gently fold and toss with a large silicone spatula until every piece of cereal is coated.
  6. Carefully transfer the coated cereal into a large, gallon-sized zip-top bag. Add the powdered sugar and rainbow sprinkles. Seal the bag tightly and shake until everything is evenly coated in the snowy, colorful sweetness.
  7. Dump the coated puppy chow onto a large piece of parchment paper. Spread it into an even layer and let it cool completely for the chocolate to set and flavors to meld.

Notes

  • Use a good-quality brand of white chocolate chips for the smoothest melt. White almond bark also works well.
  • Do not substitute Rice Chex with a denser cereal like Corn Chex.
  • Ensure the cake mix is completely cooled after heat-treating to prevent the chocolate from clumping.
  • Be gentle when coating the cereal to avoid crushing the Chex pieces.
  • For best results, use jimmie-style sprinkles as nonpareils can bleed their color.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
  • If puppy chow softens in humidity, spread it on a baking sheet and re-crisp in the oven at 250°F (120°C) for 10 minutes, then cool.
