- 8 ounces elbow macaroni
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ cup breadcrumbs (optional, for topping)
- In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In the same pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute until bubbly.
- Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Cook until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
- Remove the pot from heat and stir in the cheddar and mozzarella cheeses until melted and smooth.
- Add the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.
- Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and mix well until all pasta is coated.
- If you prefer a baked version, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Pour the mac and cheese into a greased baking dish.
- Sprinkle breadcrumbs on top for a crunchy topping.
- Bake for 20 minutes or until the top is golden and bubbly.
- Enjoy the mac and cheese hot, straight from the pot or baking dish.
Notes
- Feel free to adjust the cheese types based on your preference.
- Add cooked bacon or vegetables for extra flavor.
