Classic Creamed Onions: An Amazing Ultimate Recipe

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds pearl onions (or small yellow onions)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. If using pearl onions, blanch them in boiling water for 2 minutes, then transfer to ice water. Once cooled, peel the skins off.
  2. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the peeled onions and sauté until they are tender and lightly browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir well to coat evenly. Cook for 1-2 minutes until the flour is lightly browned.
  4. Gradually pour in the heavy cream while stirring continuously to prevent lumps. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
  5. Stir in the sugar, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Cook for another 5-7 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the onions.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in the grated Parmesan cheese until melted and well combined.
  7. Transfer the creamed onions to a serving dish and garnish with fresh parsley, if desired.
