Ingredients
Scale
120g Unsalted Butter, softened
70g Powdered Sugar
1 Large Egg Yolk
140g All-Purpose Flour
1/4 tsp Salt
Optional: Gel Food Coloring
Optional: Up to 1 tbsp Warm Water
Instructions
Beat softened butter until light and airy (2-3 minutes).
Add powdered sugar and salt, mix until smooth (1-2 minutes).
Blend in the egg yolk until fully incorporated. Add gel food coloring now if using.
Gently mix in the flour until just combined. Do not overmix.
Check dough consistency: it should be thick but pipeable. Add warm water 1 tsp at a time if too stiff.
Fit a piping bag with a large star tip and spoon in the dough.
On a parchment-lined baking sheet, pipe your desired shapes (stars, wreaths, swirls).
Freeze the baking sheet for 20-30 minutes to set the shapes.
Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
Bake chilled cookies for about 15 minutes, until edges are lightly golden.
Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Decorate once fully cooled.
Notes
Use gel food coloring for vibrant colors without altering dough consistency.
Do not skip the chilling step; it’s crucial for retaining shape.
Avoid overmixing the flour to keep cookies tender.
Decorate only when cookies are completely cool to prevent icing from melting.
The dough can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for up to a month (as piped shapes).
