This is an incredible French Onion Soup recipe. It’s a classic French delicacy with sweet caramelized onions and rich beef broth, topped with crusty bread and melted cheese. It’s a comforting and elegant dish perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large yellow onions (thinly sliced)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 8 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 baguette (sliced into 1-inch pieces)
  • 2 cups grated Gruyère cheese (or a mix of Gruyère and Parmesan)
  • Fresh thyme (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter and olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions and sugar. Stir occasionally, cooking for about 30-35 minutes until beautifully caramelized.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes.
  4. Pour in the dry white wine to deglaze the pot, scraping the bottom. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes.
  5. Add the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for about 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Arrange baguette slices on a baking sheet and bake for 5-7 minutes until golden and crisp.
  7. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls. Place toasted bread on top of each bowl and generously sprinkle with Gruyère cheese.
  8. Place bowls on a baking tray and broil for 3-5 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  9. Carefully remove from the oven and garnish with fresh thyme, if desired.
  10. Allow bowls to cool slightly before serving your incredible French Onion Soup.

Notes

  • For a sweeter soup, use sweet onions like Vidalia.
  • You can mix beef and chicken broth for a lighter flavor.
  • Add bay leaves or rosemary while simmering for more complex flavors.
  • A splash of sherry or cognac can be added during deglazing for a richer flavor.
  • Serve the soup hot for the best experience.
