Create a magical Nutella Christmas Tree, a festive and delicious puff pastry dessert filled with chocolate-hazelnut spread. This easy-to-make, tear-and-share treat is perfect for holiday gatherings, offering a delightful combination of flaky pastry and rich flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed
  • Nutella (enough to spread a generous layer)
  • 1 egg + 1 tsp water (for egg wash)
  • Powdered sugar or extra melted Nutella for decorating

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, gently roll out both thawed puff pastry sheets.
  3. Spread a generous, even layer of Nutella over one pastry sheet, leaving about a ½-inch border.
  4. Carefully place the second pastry sheet on top of the Nutella-covered one. Gently press down around the edges and across the middle to seal.
  5. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the shape of a Christmas tree: a large triangle for the body and a small rectangle at the bottom for the trunk. Save scraps for decorations.
  6. Cut horizontal lines from the outside edge towards the center on both sides of the triangle, creating “branches,” but do not cut through the center spine.
  7. Twist each “branch” two or three times to expose the layers and Nutella swirl.
  8. Whisk the egg with water and gently brush it over the entire surface of the tree for an egg wash.
  9. Bake for 18-22 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and deeply golden brown.
  10. Let the tree cool on the baking sheet for 10-15 minutes before decorating.
  11. Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with extra Nutella just before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure puff pastry is cold when cutting for cleaner shapes.
  • If dough becomes soft during assembly, chill it in the freezer for 5-10 minutes.
  • For a dairy-free version, use oil-based puff pastry and a dairy-free chocolate-hazelnut spread.
  • Consider adding raspberry jam or peppermint extract for flavor variations.
  • Savory versions can be made with pesto, sun-dried tomato paste, and cheese.
  • This Nutella Christmas Tree can be assembled ahead and frozen before baking.
  • If branches twist off, they can often be pressed back on before baking.
