Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large onions (yellow or sweet)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons fresh thyme (or 1 tablespoon dried thyme)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh rosemary (or 1 tablespoon dried rosemary)
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Peel and slice the onions into thin rings.
  3. In a large skillet, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat.
  4. Add the sliced onions to the skillet. Sauté for about 10 minutes until they start to soften.
  5. Sprinkle salt, pepper, thyme, rosemary, and garlic over the onions. Stir well to combine.
  6. Pour the onion mixture into a greased baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  7. If using, sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese over the top of the onions.
  8. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the onions are tender and have a golden brown crust.
  10. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
